Tangkoko Nature Reserve

Tangkoko Nature reserve

Explore the rainforest

Tangkoko Nature Reserve is a protected rain forest on the other side of the North Sulawesi peninsula, close to the Lembeh Strait. It takes approximately 2 1/2 hours to get there. Our departure time depends on what kind of wildlife you would like to see. There are certain time blocks you are allowed to visit, this to prevent too much disturbance to the animals living in the national park. In general, the best time to visit is in the afternoon. The main attractions, the Tarsiers (Tarsius spectrum, also called Tarsius tarsier), is nocturnal and shows itself often only late afternoon and at dusk. But a lot is possible and depending on your wishes, we can advice you what the best schedule is.

Taking the afternoon schedule as an example, We leave the resort around 10 – 11 o’clock. Once we get to Tangkoko, we have lunch, which we take with us, on the beach. Often you already can spot groups of endemic Celebes crested black macaque (Macaca nigra) monkey’s there. After lunch we hike through the forest until dusk. Other interesting animals we can encounter are the Sulawesi hornbill (Rhabdotorrhinus exarhatus) birds and the Sulawesi bear cuscus (Ailurops ursinus). Besides the animals there are beautiful big trees and lots of other interesting vegetation. You will have dinner in a local restaurant in Manado if it becomes too late to catch dinner at the resort.

We need a minimum of two persons for all tours. If it turns out that you will be the only one, we can make a special arrangement to still make the tour happen.

Make sure to check out our other adventurous excursions to the Minahasa Highlands or go white water rafting.
